When it comes to hospitality lighting, safety, luxury, and seamless functionality must go hand in hand. For a recent project at the prestigious Hilton Hotel in Kampala, Uganda, Hondel Lighting Limited was tasked with solving a common yet frustrating problem in commercial building design: staircase sensor lighting.
Standard motion-activated staircase lights often suffer from a noticeable delay. Typically, a person enters a stairwell, and the lights trigger only as they hit the sensor’s direct line of sight. If someone is moving quickly—running down the stairs or walking briskly—they often outpace the sensors. The result is a brief, unnerving moment of stepping into darkness before the system catches up, followed by lights abruptly turning off when the person is caught in the middle of a flight.
The client at Hilton Kampala had a strict mandate to eliminate this issue entirely. They required a system where the light would literally run ahead of the user. If a guest or staff member entered the 3rd floor, the lights on the 3rd floor, as well as the two floors above and the two floors below, needed to illuminate instantly—within the blink of an eye.
To achieve this “zero-latency” predictive lighting, our engineering team moved away from traditional localized sensors and designed a centralized, logic-driven architecture utilizing the HDL automation system.
Instead of placing standard motion detectors randomly on the ceilings or mid-landings, we installed HDL-MSP07M.4CT Ceiling Mount 7-in-1 Sensors directly in front of each floor’s exit door. Equipped with highly responsive PIR (Passive Infrared) motion detection and an 8-meter detection diameter, these units act as the immediate, wide-net triggers for the entire network.
How the System Operates:
Instant Detection: The moment a person approaches the stairwell door on any given floor, the HDL 7-in-1 sensor’s PIR module registers their presence instantly.
Millisecond Processing: The sensor sends an immediate signal to the central HDL control panel via the bus network.
Programmed Logic Execution: Within milliseconds, the control panel executes a custom pre-programmed logic sequence designed by our engineers.
Predictive Illumination: The system simultaneously fires the lighting circuits for the entry floor, two floors up, and two floors down.
By integrating these advanced multi-sensors directly into the central HDL logic system rather than relying on isolated fixture-based triggers, Hondel Lighting eliminated the latency inherent in traditional setups. The integrated LUX sensors within the HDL-MSP07M.4CT units also provide future-proofing capabilities, allowing for ambient light adjustments if required.
Whether a person is walking slowly up a single flight or running rapidly down several floors, they will never outpace the light. The illumination dynamically cascades ahead of them, creating a completely safe, fully visible environment that feels responsive and high-end, perfectly matching the standards of a Hilton property.
By pushing the boundaries of control logic and precise sensor placement, we delivered a bespoke solution that transforms a standard emergency exit route into an intelligent architectural feature.
